5 Ways to Build Confidence

“Low self-confidence isn’t a life sentence. Self-confidence can be learned, practiced, and mastered—just like any other skill. Once you master it, everything in your life will change for the better.” –Barrie Davenport

Those who are self-confident are easy to admire because they believe in themselves and in the abilities of others. These people are the ones in your life who encourage you to fulfill your dreams and who recognize the good in every situation. While self-confidence is an asset that everyone desires, it can be difficult to build. If you are struggling with low self-confidence, don’t be discouraged. As mentioned in the above quote, self-confidence can be learned, and it definitely does not have to rule your life.

We’ve listed a few tips below to help build your self-confidence. I also encourage you to write these tips out and post them by your desk to serve as a daily reminder. In order to be successful at building confidence, it’s vital that you remind yourself of your goal and how to reach it. With a little time and practice, you will feel more confident in the life you are living.

  1. Goodbye Negativity – This is going to be tough, but it’s time to rid your life of people and things that diminish your confidence. Even a temporary break from negative people can change the way you feel, allowing you to make strides towards higher self-confidence. Make a point to get to know people who bring out the best in you, as this is the key to leading a confident life.
  1. Negative Self Talk Don’t give up and never accept failure. The voices in your head will tell you that you aren’t good enough, smart enough or strong enough. The second you start believing these voices is the second you accept failure. Next time you hear the negative voices, take a moment to encourage yourself with positive memories and thoughts.
  1. Adjust Body Language – Oftentimes, it’s our body language that tells others we aren’t confident. Remember to stand proud, smile and make eye contact. Smiling will not only make you feel confident, but it will allow others to be comfortable in your presence. Also, don’t forget to speak slowly.
  1. Learn New Skills – Take the initiative to start teaching yourself the things you’ve always wanted to learn or accomplish. Whether it’s for your job or personal life, building new skills and taking time to fulfill your desires will allow your self-confidence to soar.
  1. Create a Great List – For times when negativity creeps back up, create a list of past successes and things you’re proud of. When you feel your self-confidence depleting, take a look at this list to free yourself from negativity.
