One of our most valuable assets is our team.  Our new “spotlight” highlights the bright team members at Far West Capital.  This is the first spotlight for 2013 and we can’t think of a better person to begin with than Trisha.

“Many will agree that Trisha Leerssen is the glue that holds Far West Capital together. With a huge heart and a genuine smile, she is the first person you’ll speak to when you call Far West Capital. Her soft and friendly voice isn’t just a benefit to the company but helps put customers at ease and makes them feel like they are calling home.”  To learn more about Trisha, click here.

Check out this great example of customer-centric thinking at an Austin Krispy Kreme store. A customer came in with a unique request – five doughnuts linked and colored representing the Olympic symbol.  One Krispy Kreme employee exemplified customer service and took the request on as a personal project. Employees are the greatest advocates of your company, and when they’re on board to make customers happy, it’s a win-win for all.

Calling all student entrepreneurs! If you know any high school or college students that own and run businesses, share the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) program with them. This Entrepreneurs’ Organization program will award winners the opportunity to engage with world-class entrepreneurs, gain media exposure, and win $10,000 and over $150,000 in donated business services (consulting, PR, printing, etc.). The regional competition for students in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma is April 4, 2013, in conjunction with the EO Round-Up Regional Conference, and applications are now being accepted. The top regional and national winners advance to the GSEA Global Finals. How do we improve the economy? Fuel entrepreneurship. As EO members, we’re excited to support the program and see what student entrepreneurs bring to the table.

An interesting list: The Heritage Foundation annually ranks the free economies of the world by analyzing countries using 10 categories, including government spending, investment freedom, and property rights. The top five countries in order: Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland. The U.S. makes the list at #10.

Companies can go above and beyond to right a wrong with a customer, but when a company errs, it’s unusual to see another company do it instead.  A musician flying from Buffalo to Detroit was not allowed to carry on his $10,000 vintage Gibson guitar and it ended up broken. Delta was slow to make up for the $2,000 in damage and when the story went viral, Gibson contacted the man and offered to repair the guitar and give him a brand new 50th anniversary version of the guitar for free. Talk about proactive! Delta later compensated the man for repairs and gave him free flight vouchers.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is we are powerful beyond measure.” In this TED talk, Drew Dudley explains an experience of changing someone’s life without any knowledge of it. It’s called a “lollipop moment” and Dudley challenges us to be everyday leaders. When was the last time you acknowledged a person who helped you or paid forward a moment that touched your life?

His appearance may look like something out of a movie to us, but Vladimir Franz, a composer and painter, was an admired Czech Republic presidential candidate who came in fifth in the polls last week, running as an Independent. Tattooed in blue, green and red ink from head to toe, Franz spent only $25,000 on his campaign and has no political experience and little knowledge about economics. This is the first time the Czech president will be elected by popular vote, and as a result of last week’s vote, the top two candidates have advanced to a run-off vote at the end of the month.

You’re hearing it here first! HatTee is a new company selling hats and visors that help golfers carry tees in a stylish yet functional manner. While the majority of college freshmen were trying to figure out the location of their classes in the fall of 2011, University of Texas at Austin students Bradley Roofner and Logan Brown were drafting a business proposal for their company, HatTee. After officially registering the company in February 2012, the business partners have hit the ground running with pitching to brands and investors. Their next big plan: the PGA merchandise show on Jan. 24-26.

What if you could create lasting happiness in just 21 days? We are often taught to work hard and then we’ll be happy.  Shawn Achor, CEO of Good Think Inc., and lecturer of Harvard University’s most popular class on positive psychology, shares that we might have it backwards and happiness actually inspires productivity. This means better work productivity, less burnout, and increased sales.  But how do you create lasting change in only 21 days? Check out the video here.
