As many business owners know, hiring the right employees for your company is key to growing your business. No matter the size of your company or what industry you’re in, having a successful hiring process is the fundamental basis of growing a stronger organization in the future. Here are some questions you can ask yourself when looking to hire the right employees:
Did you define and market the job opportunity?
To draw in the right candidates, it’s important to clearly state the necessary skills you are looking for. There should be no confusion in your employee search with what type of technology or communication skills, for example, are needed. With that being said, spread the word that you’re hiring. Add a section to your website specifically meant for job openings. Additionally, share the news via your company’s social media sites, blog and other public job boards.
Are they a cultural fit?
The significance of asking the right questions during an interview is huge. It’s a chance for you to see whether or not the candidate is an organizational fit. Can you see the candidate walking into the office each morning and being a part of your team? If you’re unsure – test it out. Allow each candidate to meet with your current employees during the interview process to ensure they’re a cultural fit. It’s also important that the person you hire shares your core values. If they don’t value the same things your company does, chances are, they may not be a good fit.
Can they walk the walk?
Even if the candidate appears to have the skills you’re looking for, is there more to them than just their said expertise? It’s important to include some type of learning exercise in the interview process to ensure the candidate can perform at the level of standard you’re expecting. Let them practice handling a cold call or writing up a business report. This will give you a better idea of whether or not the candidate is able to handle the types of tasks that are needed for the job.
Are you taking your time?
As the saying goes, “be slow to hire and quick to fire.” The hiring process takes time –and that’s okay. Even if you’re in a situation where you need to hire someone as soon as possible, taking your time with the process will benefit you and your company in the long run.
